Wet Weather Ready for Anything
We know that Auckland weather can be unpredictable. That’s why we have a robust wet weather plan in place to ensure your group stays safe, active, and engaged, no matter what the sky is doing. Our goal is to provide a seamless experience where backup activities are ready to roll the moment the conditions shift. We’re big fans of the famous outdoor saying:
"There is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing."
Alfred Wainwright, the renowned British fell-walker and guidebook author.
How We Manage the Weather
While safety is our compass — guiding every decision we make — we believe that with the right gear and a bit of planning, the fun doesn't have to wash away. We monitor the MetService forecast daily and review our activity schedule every morning to ensure the adventure continues safely.
Pre-Arrival Planning: Before you even step foot on camp, we’ve already mapped out "Plan B" activities for your group.
Morning Briefings: Every morning, our Activities Team meets to assess the day. Any necessary changes are communicated directly to your Group Leader and adult supervisors.
Expert Decision Making: Our Hosting, Activities, and Education Manager makes the final call on whether an activity is safe to proceed, postponed, or moved to a backup option.
The "Human Factor": Sometimes it’s not just the rain—it’s the cold. We may postpone an activity if we feel the group’s age, experience, or clothing (e.g., lack of rain jackets) might compromise their wellbeing.
Rain & Activity Guidelines
We use specific rainfall intensity to determine which activities stay open and which need a break.
Rain Level | Intensity | Impact on Activities |
|---|---|---|
| 2–6mm / hour | Slippery Surface Alert: The Confidence Course and Poles & Planks will be closed for safety. |
| 6–25mm / hour | Water Safety Pause: All water-based activities (including kayaking) are postponed until the rain eases. |
| 25mm+ / hour | Full Indoor Transition: All outdoor activities are cancelled. We move to our pre-arranged indoor backup programs. |
Thunder & Lightning Protocols
Electrical storms require immediate action. We follow a strict "Safety Buffer" policy to keep everyone out of harm's way.
⛈️ Thunder
If thunder is heard, certain activities will be paused for a 15-minute probationary period.
If no more thunder is heard, the fun resumes!
If thunder is continuous, the activity is cancelled until further notice.
Off site on DOC land Note: If thunder occurs off site or on the Doc area, the group must stop immediately and return to the main camp via the quickest, safest route.
⚡ Lightning
Lightning is an immediate "stop" signal for all outdoor activities.
Safety First: All guests must move indoors immediately.
The 30-Minute Rule: Activities cannot resume until 30 minutes after the very last flash of lightning.
Preparation is Key
A Note for Parents & Leaders.
To help us keep your kids outside and active for as long as possible, please ensure all campers come prepared with:
A high-quality waterproof raincoat.
A warm change of clothes (polypros or wool are best for wet conditions).
Sturdy, closed-toe footwear that you don't mind getting a bit of Waitākere mud on!
